The Llandegfedd Watersport Centre project has had a rocky ride over the last year. However, significant progress was made to October 2010. We had everything lined up to start work on the building. We had;
Welsh Water and the LLWC directors met at the end of October 2010. Welsh Water stated that in consideration and recognition of the work done, it was correct for Welsh Water to provide the funding and resources to implement the project.
As the largest Welsh Water reservoir, with the least developed facilities, nearest the largest population centres in South Wales, they will take on this responsibility rather than imposing on the goodwill and significant efforts of volunteers.
From October 2010 to January 2011, Welsh Water will review the existing proposal, plans, planning permission and come to a decision on the best way to provide these facilities. Whilst this is under way it is not possible to state the outcome of the timing of the watersports centre. Its not possible to say if it will be the building as proposed and described on this website, nor its position on the bank of the reservoir. The rest of this website has the "original proposal" as an example of what we anticipate will be delivered. It is probable that the building will be erected in the closed season over the winter of 2011/2012.
We had intended to start the building work on the Watersports centre in October 2010. Once stared, the active build programme would have a waterproof shell by Easter 2011. Dependent upon further funding, we could have then either contracted with our builder to complete the work, or fitted out the interior with volunteer labour that we have available.
There have been many attempts to deliver a user centre at Llandegfedd but all have failed due to a wide variety of reasons. This project is different in that it has been put together by the clubs and volunteers along the lines of a charity and community interest company. All the commercial organizations are also actively involved making this project a model for many others.
The centre is a facility which will be provided for all organized water sports activities. It will be provided to enhance the recreational sports at Llandegfedd reservoir whilst maintaining its rural aspect, tranquility and ecological importance. The sports supported currently; sailing, windsurfing, angling, canoeing and diving will be dramatically enhanced by providing modern facilities expected of a 21st century water sports centre.
As well as providing existing users with proper facilities, an important aspect of the project is to encourage others to participate in water sports.
Llandegfedd reservoir is an important water supply resource and therefore access to the site must always be regulated. Visitors to the site however will be welcome to visit the centre and have an introduction to the sports available through a simple registration procedure.
The project continues to involve a great number of people and this website is intended to introduce the individuals concerned, the management and organizational structures in place and who to contact for any queries.
The project is run completely by volunteers representing the clubs and associations who will use the centre. The centre will be registered as a charity.
There is a wide number of other interested parties involved with schools and colleges, local business, tourism bodies, charities and youth groups.
The User Group committee provides a vehicle for disseminating information to individuals through the clubs and ensuring that each group has a say in the way the centre is run and the services it provides.
The commercial activities of the centre are handled through the Commercial Group including the reservoir owners, site operators and water sports specialists.
The Directors of the centre were responsible for the overall running of the project up to delivery of the main construction phase after which the centre will be regulated by a committee drawn from its members. This will change now that Welsh Water have taken control of the project.
The centre will provide a range of training courses with equipment hire options to allow new participants an opportunity to get involved and have a go. Training will be provided to national standards giving opportunities to develop in water sports to the highest levels. Regulation of standards will be provided through affiliated national sports bodies as recognized by the Sports Council of Wales.
Anyone wishing to have a say or provide assistance should contact the user group representatives or directors listed.
